As chemical management options for weeds become increasingly limited due to selection for herbicide resistance, investigation of additional nonchemical tools becomes necessary. Harvest weed seed control (HWSC) is a methodology of weed management that targets and destroys weed seeds that are otherwise dispersed by harvesters following threshing. It is not known whether problem weeds in western Canada retain their seeds in sufficient quantities until harvest at a height suitable for collection. A study was conducted at three sites over 2 yr to determine whether retention and height criteria were met by wild oat, false cleavers, and volunteer canola. Wild oat consistently shed seeds early, but seed retention was variable, averaging 56% at the time of wheat swathing, with continued losses until direct harvest of wheat and fababean. The majority of retained seeds were >45 cm above ground level, suitable for collection. Cleavers seed retention was highly variable by site-year, but generally greater than wild oat. The majority of seed was retained >15 cm above ground level and would be considered collectable. Canola seed typically had >95% retention, with the majority of seed retained >15 cm above ground level. The suitability ranking of the species for management with HWSC was canola>cleavers>wild oat. Efficacy of HWSC systems in western Canada will depend on the target species and site- and year-specific environmental conditions.

There is increasing interest in the link between early linguistic skills and later language development. In a longitudinal study, we investigated infants’ (a) ability to use speech sound categories to guide word learning in the habituation-based minimal pair switch task, and (b) early productive vocabulary, related to their concurrent and later language task performance. The participants at Phase 1 were 64 infants aged 16–24 months (25 with familial risk of language/speech impairment), followed up at 27 months (Phase 2) and at 3 years (Phase 3). Phase 1 productive vocabulary was correlated with Phase 2 productive vocabulary, and with concurrent and later (Phase 3) tests of language production and comprehension scores (standardized tool), and phonology. Phase 1 switch task performance was correlated with concurrent productive vocabulary and language production scores, but not by Phase 3. However, a combination of early low vocabulary score and a preference for looking at an already-habituated word–object combination in the switch task may show some promise as an identifier for early speech–language intervention. We discuss how these relations can help us better understand the foundations of word learning.

Cognitive training improves mental abilities in older adults, but the trainability of persons with memory impairment is unclear. We conducted a subgroup analysis of subjects in the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) trial to examine this issue. ACTIVE enrolled 2802 non-demented, community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older and randomly assigned them to one of four groups: Memory training, reasoning training, speed-of-processing training, or no-contact control. For this study, participants were defined as memory-impaired if baseline Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) sum recall score was 1.5 SD or more below predicted AVLT sum recall score from a regression-derived formula using age, education, ethnicity, and vocabulary from all subjects at baseline. Assessments were taken at baseline (BL), post-test, first annual (A1), and second annual (A2) follow-up. One hundred and ninety-three subjects were defined as memory-impaired and 2580 were memory-normal. Training gain as a function memory status (impaired vs. normal) was compared in a mixed effects model. Results indicated that memory-impaired participants failed to benefit from Memory training but did show normal training gains after reasoning and speed training. Memory function appears to mediate response to structured cognitive interventions in older adults. (JINS, 2007, 13, 953–960.)

Silicon-carbon alloys were deposited by electron cyclotron resonance chemical vapor deposition (ECR-CVD) using either halogenated or non-halogenated precursors for the Si and C sources. Halogenated precursors were chosen for initial experiments to try to reduce the H content and to improve the microstructure of the silicon carbide (SiCx) films. While a wide range of compositions has been deposited using the halogenated precursors, only a limited range has been deposited so far with the non-halogenated precursors. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy show that compositions ranging from near-stoichiometric SiCx to extremely C-rich can be deposited by controlling the deposition temperature, plasma power and C/Si ratio of the halogenated precursors. At the highest C/Si-precursor ratio, the deposited film is electrically conductive with a measured resistivity of 0.067ω-cm, contains only 3-atomic-percent Si and should be considered a Si-doped carbon (C:Si) film. The excellent transparency, especially that of the C:Si films, allowed the assignment of FTIR absorption bands that are usually masked by graphitic inclusions and other impurities. A weak absorption band at 1180cm−1 was found to correlate with the electrical conductivity of the films and was attributed to the asymmetric “bond-and-a-half” Si=C stretch in a Si=C=C functional group where the pi electrons are distributed equally between the three atoms. Additional results show etching of the substrate by reactive Cl from the halogenated precursors can have a dramatic effect on the microstructure, porosity and moisture stability of the films. For experiments involving halogenated precursors, the C:Si films are much more stable than the near-stoichiometric SiCx because C:Si is deposited at lower plasma powers that do not etch the Si substrate. Finally, preliminary results show that near-stoichiometric SiCx films deposited using non-halogenated precursors are much more stable with respect to moisture incorporation than those deposited with halogenated precursors.

Effective inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), a family of connective tissue-degrading enzymes, could be useful for the treatment of diseases such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, and arthritis. Many of the known MMP inhibitors are derived from peptide substrates, with high potency in vitro but little selectivity among MMPs and poor bioavailability. We have discovered nonpeptidic MMP inhibitors with improved properties, and report here the crystal structures of human stromelysin-1 catalytic domain (SCD) complexed with four of these inhibitors. The structures were determined and refined at resolutions ranging from 1.64 to 2.0 Å. Each inhibitor binds in the active site of SCD such that a bulky diphenyl piperidine moiety penetrates a deep, predominantly hydrophobic S′1 pocket. The active site structure of the SCD is similar in all four inhibitor complexes, but differs substantially from the peptide hydroxamate complex, which has a smaller side chain bound in the S′1 pocket. The largest differences occur in the loop forming the “top” of this pocket. The occupation of these nonpeptidic inhibitors in the S′1 pocket provides a structural basis to explain their selectivity among MMPs. An analysis of the unique binding mode predicts structural modifications to design improved MMP inhibitors.
